I'm have a degree in Pharmacy which I decided to complete with a Master’s Degree in Marketing & Health. A six-month internship, spanning from June to December, was due as part of my fifth year in my Pharmacie degree. My goal was to obtain an internship close to clinical trials in the industry, I wanted to avoid large laboratories. That's when I stumbled upon the opportunity to join the Clinical Operations team on LinkedIn. The international and multimodal aspects immediately caught my attention and I was particularly drawn to the diverse tasks involved in the role.
There was such a great fit during my internship that I later agreed to the proposition to complete an apprenticeship at SOPHiA GENETICS as well in my sixth year of study when completing my Master degree. This now allows me to discover the Medical Affairs department.
I was immediately immersed in projects and appreciated the briefing my tutor provided on my first day. This allowed me to contribute to a team working session from day one! The team's responsiveness made me feel involved and valued. In addition, the onboarding process was positive, with a warm welcome and thorough guidance on the first day. I appreciated being eased into the work environment to avoid feeling overwhelmed. I was quickly provided with expectations and ongoing support to deliver first wins.
I mainly worked on the development of a new module for 2,5 years and then transitioned to helping to the development of our Generation2 Platform in the last six months, evolving from C++ to web development. This journey allowed me to develop a full-stack engineer profile, as I gained insights into both front-end and back-end development, which is very valuable for an engineering career in my view. The experience of working on tangible, important projects was invaluable. I learned to define development specifications collaboratively, and I gained a thorough understanding of the tasks at hand. Beyond technical skills, the exposure to SOPHiA GENETICS' international environment enriched my language proficiency, particularly in English, and could broaden my intercultural competencies.
I have worked on the Deep Lung IV Study, which has been cornerstone to the deployment of SOPHiA GENETICS’ multimodal capabilities. I oversaw, the documentation of the enrolled customer sites as part of the study. During the project, I was able to learn from direct contacts with members of my team, in other departments, such as Data Science and Legal as well as regularly engage with the C-Suite.
I’ve always felt well-integrated. For example, I had the opportunity to join the Medical Team’s retreat. Having the team readily available for questions contributed significantly to a positive experience.
Nothing unusual stood out! Although I am quite shy, so I sometimes feel intimidated by the crowds the cafeteria- haha. The atmosphere is supportive, I feel on par with my colleagues and I’ve learned so much on the career path I want to take.
For those considering SOPHiA GENETICS, my advice is to approach the opportunity as a chance to discover new technologies. Even on the technical side, dealing with information related to genetics and radiomics is not just a job—it's a fascinating experience. Embrace the youthful and dynamic environment. Make the most of the international exposure, as it not only enhances language skills but culture we have as that will broaden your perspective. Lastly, don't hesitate to express your interest in a more extended stay; SOPHiA GENETICS values commitment, and my transition to a more permanent role was seamless.
