Human Generative Art 'Experiment'

In a world where artificial intelligence often dominates discussions about creativity, this project began with a different vision: harnessing the power of human imagination.

Three years ago, inspired by the rise of AI-generated art and driven by a passion for visual expression, Gilbert Perrin (VP, Platform Design and Innovation) proposed an experiment in human generative art.

The idea was simple:

A shared canvas, a set of rules, and an invitation for everyone to contribute their creativity.

The Rules

• A 2m x 1.5m canvas, divided into a grid of 200 cells.
• A limited palette of colored pens to create a cohesive visual experience.
• Each participant chose a cell and drew whatever inspired them, with one key constraint: no borders. Every drawing had to remain open to its neighbouring cells, allowing others to continue, transform, or reimagine the artwork.

The Process
Over a year and a half, nearly 100 people from across Sophia Genetics—engineers, scientists, marketers, and more—added their unique touch to the canvas. Julie Romain (Former Head of Talent Management) played a pivotal role, organising sessions, encouraging participation, and turning coffee breaks and evening gatherings (fueled by pizza and beer) into creative collaborations.

The Result
The outcome is a dynamic mosaic where Pink Floyd’s iconic prism meets Led Zeppelin’s legendary symbols, Naruto’s energy blends with SpongeBob’s whimsy, and Space Invaders coexist with genetic sequences and abstract designs.

This artwork is more than just a visual experience; it’s a celebration of the diversity of thought, culture, and expertise within our community. It reflects the range of ages, backgrounds, and passions that define SOPHiA GENETICS, showcasing the beauty that emerges when we create together.

Now displayed at the entrance of our headquarters, this canvas serves as a daily reminder: innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people who bring their unique perspectives, creativity, and collaboration to the table.
